Why did Pied Piper invent & complete this study?

At Pied Piper, we provide facility evaluation programs that are custom-tailored for each of our clients in the automotive and broader motor vehicle industries as well as other industries. We use in-person evaluators for that service, but we wanted to take advantage of recent advances in AI computer vision to allow us to do much more. The automated evaluation process we created allowed us to measure every single auto dealership in the United States using existing Google satellite and Street View imagery for this first of its kind study. This kind of technology cost billions to develop just a couple years ago, but now Pied Piper can use it for our existing and prospective clients and we are excited to share our findings with you today.

What does this industry study measure?

We used the computer vision capabilities of an advanced large language model AI to visually analyze satellite and Street View imagery of every automotive dealership in the United States, with dealership locations provided by Urban Science. This automated process identifies features such as signage, building and road surface condition, landscaping, lot layout, and more, which we then statistically analyze to give each automotive brand a score on the "Look-Alike Index™", which represents how similar a brand's dealerships are to each other.
